Disquiet by The Necks

Label: Northern Spy

While the title of the new album by Australians Tony Buck, Chris Abrahams, and Lloyd Swanton, aka The Necks is Disquiet, for those who are (quite) familiar with the trio, there just might be something that is not disquiet, but rather disconcerting about this triple album and The Necks’ opus as a whole – how are these three guys able to stick to their initial concept and still be able to continue producing some quite inventive, elongated sets of improvisational ambient jazz?

After all, The Necks have been together since 1987, and for almost 40 years they have stuck to their improvisational guns without at any point repeating themselves or boring anybody that bothered to take a detailed listen. Detailed, since any of their tracks rarely took less than ten minutes to develop.

As far as Disquiet, their new triple album, is concerned, there just not might be anything disquiet about it, quite the opposite, as it is practically all about peace and tranquility, with the trio pushing things to limits – as the three CDs includes four musical excursions (no songs here whatsoever) that evolve, slowly shift, never really coming back to the starting point, but always having a sensible conclusion.

Being so long together, it seems The Necks have developed a tight empathy and a set of tight instincts, with the three musicians involved always being able to sense where each of them is going, making their runs shift with full sense and logic.
