Louvado Abismo (Praised Abyss) is a Portuguese avant-garde death rock band that drops its enthralling self-titled debut album in the plethora of releases we’re almost drowning in. The quartet of Lisbon offers here a genre bending mish mash of music styles.
Of course the members of the band have already built up some experience in versatile artistic backgrounds. Lead singer and theatre actress Patrícia Andrade is a former member of the doom metal band Sinistro, Hugo Conim is already twenty years guitarist in the old school doom metal band Dawnrider and connected with other underground bands like The Limit and Dragon’s Kiss. Pedro Almeida is the drumhead martyr of Scum Liquor, Velar and several other projects. Bass player Hélder Luís is also active in Mozart Meets Chaos and half of the experimental electronic duo The Sleeper has Awakened.
You can already imagine what can happen when you put these four artists together. Louvado Abismo is a real witches’ cauldron who strikes with schizophrenic and psychological turmoil. Andrade boosts the twisted atmospheres of this album with her theatrical vocals sung in Portuguese. Louvado Abismo breaths without doubt some kind of insane eighties sensation with post punk/dead rock guitar riffs, industrial effects, danceable beats and haunting guitar synths. The vibes of this psycho avant-garde album are intense, spooky and addictive.
Without understanding any word of the lyrics Louvado Abismo takes us without hesitation into the abyss of the mind, constructing a combustive gathering of lost emotions. Louvado Abismo feels like a soundtrack for a film-noir or a surrealistic documentary about the side effects of a deep mind exploration. This braincell peeler ends surprisingly in a slow and peaceful melancholic ambiance that allows us to recover a little from this remarkable sonic attack.
