The Italian experimental doom metal band Ufomammut celebrates their twenty five years of sonic exploration with a new album called Hidden. During a quarter of a century the band had a stable line-up with only a drummer switch in 2021 when Levre took over from Vita.
With the album Fenice (2022) the band announced a new beginning. They introduced a more subdued doom impression with many silent parts incorporated into the songs. After the change of batons, Ufomammut still stuck to their original sound and showed off a slightly new approach and shift on their newest album.
The trio focuses this time to a more intensive and heavy wall of sound. The haunting vocals of Urlo (who also plays bass guitar and is responsible for the effects and synths) are supported by pounding riffs by Poia and complex drum work (Levre) fused with experimental psychedelic electronic vibes. The band re-invents in some kind of way their recognisable sound.
Hidden reflects the concept of the presence of everything in our existence and the ability to bring to the surface what lies within. The band succeeds in keeping the attention during our (long) listening sessions. At first we had some doubts about Hidden but once we got deeper (thanks to our faith in the band) into the album, Hidden showed its growing potential.
Ufomammut exposes a series of heavy crushing songs with weird mysterious melodies freezing into unearthly and psychedelic atmospheres. Our conclusion is that we have received an excellent psychedelic doom album that pierces the eardrums and grows with every listen. Honestly, we have to obey the Ufomammut riff again.
