The Swiss noise rock band Coilguns never disappoints. We remember them playing live in the small Belgian punk cave The Pit’s in Kortrijk as opener for the American noise quartet Wrong. Their passion and energy made us respect them until this day. One thing is for sure, we won’t see Coilguns play in small venues like The Pit’s anymore. The band around front and hugman Louis Jucker have been on some kind of a coddiwompling musical path. Their perseverance and hard work opened new doors to play on bigger stages such as Desertfest.
Odd Love is their newest album and to be honest this is another big step ahead for Coilguns. The fundamentals of the eleven bodacious songs on Odd Love were originally written by guitarist and founder Jona Nido alone at home during the first two months of the Spring 2020 COVID lockdown. The band teamed up with American producer Scott Evans for the technical side of the recording process. Odd Love shows an intense and emotionally loaded barrel of noise rock with overt lyrics.
The enticing and catchy songs spew a wide diversity and ram themselves clearly and distinctly to higher regions. Junker sings, sighs and screams through the delicious sounding riffs and guitar work of Nido. We certainly cannot forget to mention drummer Luc Hess who seamlessly hammers the songs in such a tight way together. Coilguns also weaves experimental fragments in their songs like funny whistling, unexpected out of tune piano melodies and heavy outbursts.
Odd Love is a refreshingly good noise rock album that gets better with every listening session. Needless to say, Coilguns doesn’t tick like a precise Swiss clock, the band still sticks to their stubborn old school DIY spirit with plenty of crazy twists in their energetic music.
