When you browse through the Heavy Psych Sounds label’s well-stocked catalogue searching for psychedelic rock, stoner, sludge, retro, vintage, space rock etc, you won’t be disappointed with what the label has to offer. The Scottish psychedelic rock band The Cosmic Dead fits perfectly among the pile of interesting band releases on the Italian record label.
After an abundance of album releases on other labels The Cosmic Dead spews their second release on Heavy Psych Sounds with plenty of verve against our eardrums. Infinite Peaks is a two track album with psychotropic sound structures which take the listener into an adventurous and kaleidoscopic trip. Omar Aborida (bass, guitars), Tommy Duffin (drums), Calum Calderwood (Fiddle) and Luigi Pasquini (synthesiser) weave their musical explorations into a maze of wah-wah infused space rock.
The first track (‘Navigator #9’) starts slow but has a fascinating build up with weird electronic pulses ending in a climax. The high level of instrumental density is kept under control through the introduction of slower fragments and electronic resonances. It’s not that the Glaswegians play with the handbrake on their two drawn-out tracks, they also just let themselves slide through the bends with groovy and repetitive parts that really ignite the psychedelic fuse. ‘Space Mountain’ (track two) shows the heavier side of The Cosmic Dead with cool riffs, a tight rhythm section and dreamy cosmic synth bleeps.
Infinite Peaks is an album that reveals more details after every listening session. Recommended for fans of Ozric Tentacles, Hawkwind, Comacozer, Farflung and Giöbia (with whom they released the split album The Intergalactic Connection – Exploring The Sideral Remote Hyperspace in 2021 on Heavy Psych Sounds). The Cosmic Dead launches here a versatile sonic journey filled with luscious psychedelic ear candy.
