Year of the Cobra is singer/bassist Amy Tung Barrysmith and drummer Jon Barrysmith, who met in 2007 while playing in other bands. They quickly bonded after they wrote their first song (‘White Wizard’) together in a couple of hours’ time. They decided against more band members as Amy’s ‘Rig Of Doom’ makes their sound huge and heavy, while Jon’s dynamic, hard-hitting drumming creates the perfect compliment. The haunting and deliberate bass riffs drive deep, while Amy’s melodic vocals sail and weave together the threads of this true power duo.
After their inception in 2015 they released their debut EP The Black Sun, which was co-released by DHU Records and Devil’s Child Records. On October 28th they will release their highly anticipated debut full-length, In The Shadows Below, which was produced, engineered, and mixed by the legendary Billy Anderson (Sleep, Melvins, Acid King).
The band commented: “For our debut album, it was essential that we got the right tones and feel. We wanted it to sound huge but also wanted to be able to recreate it live. ‘Lion and the Unicorn’ was the first song we recorded with Billy Anderson (Sleep, Melvins, High on Fire), and the tones and direction he was taking us in were exactly what we were looking for. The ethereal vocals happened almost by accident. We had been recording all night, and at 5am, Amy literally crawled into the vocal booth. It only took two or three takes, and when we heard it, we all immediately looked at each other and said, “Yeah, that’s it. We got it.”
In The Shadows Below will be released by STB Records on CD, vinyl, cassette and digital (pre-order through here). Listen to the exclusive premiere of the track ‘Lion an the Unicorn’ here:
