Larry Herweg (Pelican) & Ben Carr (5ive) formed their instrumental metal collaboration INTRCPTR back in 2016 & after releasing thunderous debut I in Summer 2017, add pulsating EP II. The guys have taken their project on the road in Southern California, sharing the stage with the likes of Big Business & Godflesh, with plans to venture further afield in the near future.
Similar in style to I’s opener ‘Nightrider’, II is sparked into life with ‘Dusted’; a turbo-charged muscle car speeding across a battered highway in the dead of night. The drums set a bristling tempo, firing lightning bolts of heavy guitar at the moonlit sky; the music painting the canvas with rich, volatile imagery.
‘D.I.W.I.W.Y.L’ merges the duo’s respective, familiar sounds from their Pelican & 5ive roots wonderfully. Fleshing out a moody rhythm, spine-tingling energy prickles against the hazy twilight, throbbing with scuzzy breakdowns. It’s a powerful track, speeding up & slowing down below the setting sun, disappearing over the horizon & leaving a trail of settling dust.
II continues immediately where I left off, packing punch & injecting more of the spirited desert vibe. The record is only a short trip, the duration less than half the length of their debut, but still delivering another burst of no-nonsense post-metal. The two tracks leave a yearning for more, but for now, we’ll have to wait while INTRCPTR slowly build their juggernaut.
INTRCPTR’s II is self-released & available on Bandcamp now!
