The sound artist has become an in-vogue description these days. For some artists, it is a very fitting one, for others it just might be a suitable fashion tag, to say the least.

Canadian producer Michael Scott Dawson is also described as a sound artist and through his four releases so far, including his latest, The Tinnitus Chorus, he has actually proven that he does indeed need to be described as such.

With Dawson, that sound crafting art involves a number of elements he includes in his music, defying a very specific genre that can veer anywhere from seemingly simple crafted melodies to tape loops, field recordings, and elsewhere.

Sure, anybody can try that, but it is a matter of understanding, not only what you are including within, but also the manner in which you combine such elements into something that presents viable, listenable music.

On The Tinnitus Chorus Dawson does exactly that, this time he does that through a series of collaborations, eleven to be exact (two with Michael Grigoni), a process that in itself poses additional challenges, as the different ideas and approaches of those involved have to form a unison that works.

And on the twelve compositions here, it all does. We get a pastoral set of post-ambient sketches that involve seemingly disparate elements that Dawson pieces together with such a light touch that it makes perfect sense.
