Eremo is a four-piece math rock band from Milano. Last December they released their debut album, s/t. It’s an album made up of 6 emotionally charged, melodic, fast paced tracks. While listening to the album I could definitely hear prog, metal and post-rock influences. The band has the signature math rock starts and stops down to a science. The vocals really add to the pace and emotion of each track. The music and lyrics come together to tell a story. A story filled with memories of the past and the realities of the present. Both of which don’t seem that different. I’d also like to note the cover art for the album, created by Federico Verde. It is really well done.
Throughout the album, I found the vocals frantic in its delivery. Since this is the band’s debut album, it was difficult to tell if that is their signature style or if it was done purposefully to add to the feel of the album. After listening to the album all the way through I thought it definitely added to the feel of the album. The guitar often complimented the vocals which definitely added even more emotion to each track. The musicianship of each member really stands out in the album.
The contrasting guitar work on the album was really great, adding multifaceted and interesting layers to each track. One guitar held the melodic end while the other kept at a quick pace, then coming together in a heavy layer of sound. The punchy bass lines and versatile drum beats kept the tracks going. It would really be great to see the band play live and see those hands and arms in action. The hills and valleys created in each track kept me engaged throughout the album.
After listening to the album several times, I listened to it again while reading the lyrics the band provided on their Bandcamp page. I really was happy to see that the band had included the lyrics. The lyrics are poetic and insightful and helped to complete the images I had of each track.
My favorite tracks off this album are ‘aveva ragione’ and ‘deserto di mais’. Eremo have done well with this debut album. It has a little of everything to satisfy the appetite for math rock, prog, metal and post-rock enthusiasts alike. I’m definitely looking forward to their next release.
