Comes off like a modern version of the 80s band, Black Sun Ensemble, and becomes enmeshed with other purveyors of loud, droning psych in my mind.

It’s as if Årabrot and Eyehategod had a big hairy chested bearded baby.

There is much to love here, and they offer something different from a doom scene which has gone increasingly heavier. A welcome return to a classic 70’s sound.

It moves at a doom like crawl but without any of the steady, numbing comforts of doom riffs. Instead it maintains a high end horror scream as slabs of sound smack into you. It’s like a distressed animal hit by a car, howling in terror and rage as it drags its crushed lower half behind it along the road. ‘Blood Loss’ is an intense blast of crushing noise and wailing despair, an ideal soundtrack to some of our summers then.

Here Lies Man sophomore album You Will Know Nothing continues to nourish fuzzy, riffy, danceable grooves.

This is not paint by numbers paisley psych, rather, it hovers at the edges of Kraut rock and has a somewhat Motorik feel in some passages.

Of the many great things filling this weekend few can be as illustrative of Supersonic’s approach and its audience than the closing headline acts. An English folk singer in her 80’s and an American black metal band might appear at the furthest poles from one another, but that a considerable proportion of us aren’t sure which we’ll choose to watch, and that the deep currents that connect them seem natural and obvious, says much for the spirit of the festival.

What we ultimately have is one of the finer albums of this year, and if we are being honest, one of the best psych albums of recent years.

3/4 of Agalloch have swallowed up the front-man from Giant Squid and produce one of the finest progressive rock/metal albums of the year.
